Rockridge – Oakland Neighborhood

Two of the most coveted communities in Oakland share a name and a border: Rockridge (also known as Lower Rockridge) and Upper Rockridge. Offering distinctly different features and lifestyles, both communities represent the kind of diversity that may be found in the city of Oakland.

Lower Rockridge

Lower Rockridge has become a favorite East Bay community, and is considered by many as the epitome of Oakland living. It is a diverse community that offers all the perks of urban living while maintaining a close-knit neighborhood vibe.

Residents are a good mix of families and singles, as the area’s employment opportunities and top-rated schools make it an attractive location for everyone. It has an excellent public transportation system including BART and bus lines, and freeways that make traveling to nearby Bay Area neighborhoods fast and convenient.

With its proximity to UC Berkeley, Lower Rockridge gives off a college town vibe, with shops, restaurants and bars buzzing with activity all day and night.

Real estate in Lower Rockridge

Rockridge boasts original Craftsman Bungalows constructed during its development in the 1920s and 1930s. These two to four-bedroom single-family homes with their brick chimneys, wooden shingles, and dark oak features dominate the real estate scene, lending traditional and timeless charm to the area.

Other architectural styles in the community include Mediterranean, Tudor Revival and Traditional.

Attractions and Amenities in Lower Rockridge

Rockridge’s College Avenue is the community hub with its numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Here are some of the most popular attractions in this bustling neighborhood:

  • Market Hall – a European-style shopping center housing eight of the most-loved establishments in Rockridge
  • Frog Park – a walking path surrounded by redwood trees, leading to the Temescal Creek bed
  • The only Dreyer’s ice cream parlor in the country, found on College Avenue
  • Pegasus Books and Diesel – the area’s popular independent bookstores

Upper Rockridge

While Lower Rockridge is located at the foot of Oakland Hills, Upper Rockridge has been developed along the hills. The elevated sites result in spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge andthe surrounding neighborhoods.

Upper Rockridge is an affluent community offering privacy and tranquility to residents while remaining close to all the action in Lower Rockridge and other nearby communities. The present neighborhood is the result of the redevelopment that took place after the 1991 firestorm which destroyed much of the area.

Upper Rockridge boasts beautiful high-end single-family homes, most of which were built only in the last two decades. Despite their recent construction, these homes are faithful to the traditional architectural styles in the Bay Area, specifically the Mediterranean, Tudor Revival and Craftsman styles.

Most of these grand homes sit on lots measuring at least 2,000 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and nine rooms in total. They feature such luxurious details as hardwood floors, well-appointed kitchens and garage spaces for two or more cars.

Attractions and amenities in Upper Rockridge

Upper Rockridge’s public pathway system is one of its best-loved features, offering residents the opportunity to exercise while exploring the neighborhood.
